Punta Gorda’s Buckley Pass – Light at the End of the Tunnel

For years, there has been speculation that a nautical cut-through would occur in Punta Gorda’s Bird Section. Recent Punta Gorda City Council actions, however, are solidifying plans that will likely give boaters access to the new waterway by the end of 2019.

The City of Punta Gorda has been involved in the project since 2013. The project was originally spearheaded by the Punta Gorda Boater’s Alliance and the late Captain John “Jay” Buckley, the namesake for the pass.

Currently, the path that connects the Punta Gorda Isles canal system to Charlotte Harbor leads boaters through the existing Ponce de Leon Inlet harbor access point. Buckley’s Pass will create a shorter more direct and convenient route.

The City is fronting the project’s funds necessary through its general fund reserves. On Dec. 5, the city will hold a public hearing regarding the method of collecting special assessments in the proposed “benefit area,” or all land parcels that would have a direct benefit impact from the project. Offsetting any assessments, homeowners in the Bird Section should see increased home values because of the cut-through.
